Double Vision

Bonjour à tous!

On se retrouve aujourd’hui pour une séance photo un peu spéciale, elle s’est fait à 4 mains, les miennes et celles de mon ami photographe Jordi Juando, photographe venu de Barcelone spécialement  pour cette séance. Nous nous sommes connus en mai dernier lors d’un séjour à Barcelone car j’admirais ses photos masculines prises toujours près de bâtiments modernes extraordinaires dans la capitale catalane.

Des images à la fois très sensuelles et poètiques confrontant la chair et le bêton ou le métal, notre admiration pour notre travail était commune et la rencontre s’était extrêmement bien passée, nous avons échangé sur nos vies, nos inspirations, recherche de modèles et galères comme bons moments dans la photographie.

Suite à cette rencontre, Jordi et moi nous sommes promis de nous revoir pour un projet photo commun avec un même modèle.

Hello everyone!

We’re meeting again today for a photo shoot that’s a bit special. It was done with 4 hands, mine and those of my photographer friend Jordi Juando, who came from Barcelona especially for this shoot. We met last May during a trip to Barcelona, when I admired his masculine photos, always taken near extraordinary modern buildings in the Catalan capital. Our admiration for each other’s work was shared and the meeting went extremely well. We exchanged views on our lives, our inspirations, our search for models and our photographic trials and tribulations. Following this meeting, Jordi and I promised to meet again for a joint photo project with the same model. 

Le modèle en question c’est Sylvain, un acteur, modèle et figurant avec qui j’avais déjà eu l’occasion de travailler il y a quelques années. Sylvain est  autant bel homme que belle personne tout en ayant un regard aiguisé sur la photographie, ses poses et le rendu final des choses. Travailler avec lui est passionnant et c’est tout naturellement que je me suis tourné vers lui pour cette séance avec Jordi qui comptait sur moi pour lui trouver un modèle sur place à la fois compétant et bien fait de sa personne. Sylvain réunit complétement ces qualités et bien plus encore. 

The model in question is Sylvain, an actor, model and extra with whom I’d already had the opportunity to work a few years ago. Sylvain is as much a handsome man as he is a beautiful person, with a sharp eye for photography, its poses and the final rendering of things. Working with him is fascinating, and it was only natural that I should turn to him for this session with Jordi, who was counting on me to find him a model on the spot who was both competent and good-looking. Sylvain combines all these qualities and more. 

Le choix du lieu ne fut pas facile car Jordi voulait une architecture en rapport avec le modèle, dont les lignes du corps puissent correspondre aux lignes des édifices. Plusieurs lieux sont venus sur la table (via Whats’app!) et Sylvain a apporté ses idées, c’est après un repérage en ville la veille du shooting que Jordi et moi sommes tombés d’accord sur le quartier Antigone à Montpellier réalisé par un autre catalan: Ricardo Boffil. Ce quartier fourmille de lignes géométriques qui fonctionnaient bien avec notre projet. 

Choosing the location wasn’t easy, as Jordi wanted the architecture to match the model, so that the lines of the body could match the lines of the buildings. Several locations came to the table (via Whats’app!) and Sylvain contributed his ideas, but it was after scouting the city the day before the shoot that Jordi and I agreed on the Antigone district in Montpellier, designed by another Catalan: Ricardo Boffil. This district is teeming with geometric lines, which worked well with our project. 

Sylvain, Jordi et moi nous sommes donc retrouvés un dimanche d’août pour ce shooting commun. Pas de chance, il pleuvait! ce qui ne nous a pas démotivés pour autant puisqu’à Antigone se trouvent pas mal d’arcades sous lesquelles on peut se réfugier et c’est là, que la magie a opéré. Ce qui est assez incroyable, c’est que ces unités de lieux nous aient inspirés de deux façons différentes. Là où Jordi cherchait une impulsion, des tons clairs, un dynamisme, moi je cherchais le calme, un aspect plus sombre et de la douceur. Nos deux visions sont différentes mais se complètent aussi très bien révélant deux facettes de Sylvain. Je crois sincèrement qu’au delà de la technique, ce qui fait un bon photographe, c’est son point de vue sur son sujet et j’ai adoré le démontrer grâce à cette nouvelle expérience.

Jordi n’a pas hésité à se mettre à terre même avec la pluie pour capturer Sylvain sous tous les angles mais le résultat en valait la peine, le corps statuesque de Sylvain s’intégrant parfaitement à cette architecture néo-classique. 

So Sylvain, Jordi and I got together on a Sunday in August for this joint shoot. Unluckily, it was raining! But that didn’t dampen our spirits, since Antigone has a number of arcades you can take refuge under, and that’s where the magic happened. What’s quite incredible is that we were inspired in two different ways by these units of place. Where Jordi was looking for impulse, light tones and dynamism, I was looking for calm, a darker aspect and a softness. Our two visions are different, but they also complement each other very well, revealing two facets of Sylvain. I sincerely believe that beyond technique, what makes a good photographer is his point of view on his subject, and I loved demonstrating this through this new experience. 

Jordi didn’t hesitate to get down on the ground, even in the rain, to capture Sylvain from every angle, but the result was well worth the effort, as Sylvain’s statuesque body blended in perfectly with the neo-classical architecture.

Sylvain, pour ma part, ma beaucoup surpris. Il est un vrai caméléon qui a su interpréter à la perfection ce que nous souhaitions de lui. Mes photos sont plus sombres mais révèlent une atmosphère romantique voir même post apocalyptique, il n’y a personne sur les images, juste lui et c’est ce que j’ai trouvé intéressant, cela nous raconte une histoire digne d’un film dans un univers parallèle. Il y a une fragilité de Sylvain que je n’ai pas souvent vu de lui et j’ai été heureux qu’il m’offre cette part de lui, en extérieur et dans un temps post-pluie ensuite qui finalement renforçait encore plus cette ambiance. Vers la fin, je propose à Sylvain de poser ses mains sur la Victoire de Samothrace, statue qui clotûre le quartier Antigone, Sylvain me dit qu’il pourrait monter plus haut, j’ai peur qu’on nous interpelle pour cela mais il ose et le résultat est onirique à souhait car Sylvain semble conquérir le ciel. 

Sylvain surprised me greatly. He’s a real chameleon who interpreted perfectly what we wanted from him. My photos are darker, but reveal a romantic, even post-apocalyptic atmosphere. There’s no one in the images, just him, and that’s what I found so interesting: it tells us a story worthy of a film in a parallel universe. There’s a fragility about Sylvain that I haven’t often seen from him, and I was happy that he offered me this part of himself, outdoors and in post-rainy weather afterwards, which ultimately reinforced this mood even more. Towards the end, I suggested that Sylvain place his hands on the Victory of Samothrace, the statue that closes off the Antigone district. Sylvain told me he could go higher, and I was afraid we’d be called out for it, but he dared, and the result was dreamlike, as Sylvain seemed to conquer the sky.
